Lewis Pugh

Ocean Advocate | Maritime lawyer | Pioneer Swimmer

Who am I

Lewis Pugh is a swimmer, environmentalist and former maritime lawyer. He has pioneered more swims around famous landmarks than any other swimmer in history, and is the only person to have completed a long distance swim in every ocean of the world.

He is probably best recognised for becoming the first person to undertake a long distance swim at the North Pole.

Through swimming, Lewis has achieved a unique perspective on climate change, having witnessed retreating glaciers, decreasing sea ice, coral bleaching, severe droughts, and the migration of animals to colder climates on his numerous expeditions. As a result of these experiences, Lewis is determined to raise awareness about the fragility of our environment and to encourage everyone to take action.

In his speeches, Lewis discusses the three simple steps he uses to complete seemingly impossible tasks, shares his experiences of team-building and ensuring excellence, and talks about how to deal with both failure and success.

Lewis was educated at the University of Cape Town and the University of Cambridge. He now spends his time public speaking, lobbying world leaders to protect the environment and, of course, swimming.

He has been named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum
